About ChaoChao
ChaoChao is from Shanghai and is currently double majoring in Ceramics and Illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design.
In clay, I found the closest thing to spiritual wholeness. There’s a quiet divinity in the way it transforms in fire—alive with its own temperament, always resisting control. Clay carries the weight of millennia—of culture, belief, technology—yet remains humble, grounded. It gives me peace, even as it challenges me.
My work is deeply rooted in Chinese history, religion, and folklore—stories passed down through generations, now fading from public memory. Even in their homeland, few still heed the moral and spiritual wisdom they offer. Yet for me, this pursuit of inner truth is essential. Through sculpture, I retell these stories in a voice that is quiet but deliberate.
I favor a raw, elemental visual language—high-iron clay, ash from wood-fired kilns, the marks left by the chisel. These materials, like the earth itself, hold tension, weight, and emotion. Only such honest materiality can hold the stories I want to tell.
